Landless Winners

“There are no Sindhi beggars” said a man who left Sindh, with his family, during the 1947 Partition. This is a striking sentence. It gives clarity to me about how the Hindu Sindhis, who became landless and penniless, and even homeless in 1947, today have become economic winners, in many parts of the world.

The Landless Winners is a story about how the Hindu Sindhis in Indonesia transformed themselves from refugees, to become migrants and finally to economic winners. It is based on the stories of the respondents who experienced the Partition. Many stories have not been told as the refugee generation have passed away. This book was written mainly for the younger Sindhi generation in Indonesia. But, it might have some value for other readers.

Writing this book has been a wonderful journey. I met people whose names I had heard but had not met before. I met new people and created a relationship with them. Many of the elderly respondents are grateful that I was writing this book. I have been blessed in many ways. I was fortunate to have eaten vegetarian Soto in one house, had a full lunch in another house, and eaten kachoris and drank Indian chai in yet another house. Its not the food, but the affection in offering the food that touched me.

Many friends and family members have given me the encouragement to finish this book, especially when I thought it would not be of interest to people. The inspiration came from Ujjwal Pradhan, and final encouragement came from the very nice review provided by Mering Ngo. Thank you.
